Plans revealed for Darwen Tower restoration works

An application has been submitted to restore Darwen’s iconic Jubilee Tower.

The move comes following news that the Darwen Town Deal Board has secured vital funding to top up the £80,000 raised by Darwen Rotary through support from residents.

The new plans, needed due to the landmark being a Grade II listed building, are seeking permission for detailed works which will see the landmark restored and new plaques and information boards installed.

John Jacklin from Darwen Rotary said:

“The show of support to restore our beloved tower has been overwhelming.

“For many, the tower is a symbol of ‘home’ and there’s nothing better than a walk up there to see the stunning views over our town and beyond – you can even see as far as Blackpool Tower on a clear day!

“It’s incredible that we were able to raise £80,000 so that the tower can continue to stand proud for many generations to come.”

As part of the fundraising efforts, a new video was created telling the fascinating story of how the tower was a celebration of the ‘right to roam’ following events in 1896 when access rights over the moors were claimed for the townspeople.

It also commemorates Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 – celebrated in the tower’s official name – Darwen Jubilee Tower.

Reports submitted as part of the planning application outline how the condition of the tower has deteriorated in recent years with temporary supports currently in place.

The new planning application is for permission to undertake works to the observation decks, repointing of the building with lime and mortar, stone repairs, re-glazing of the windows, new handrails, replacement of rainwater pipes and more.

It’s been submitted after the Darwen Town Deal Board was able to secure more than £200,000 to help pay for the works as part of a Government scheme for ‘quick win’ projects – further boosted by financial support from Darwen Town Council.

Chair of the board, Wayne Wild, Group Commercial Director of WEC Group – one of the town’s biggest employers, said: “It was a very proud moment for the board when we were able to get the money needed to restore the tower.

“It’s an important project for our whole town – shown by the outpouring of support for the Rotary fundraising campaign.

“There’s nothing quite like driving in to Darwen and seeing the tower sit proudly high up on the moors.

“These works will help bring it back to its former glory so it can be enjoyed at its very best once more.”

If approved, the work, which is expected to start in spring – weather permitting – will be designed not to disturb the ecology of the area.

A Lego version of the tower had been created by the Rotary Club to help boost fundraising efforts.

It will remain in Darwen Market – being used to help support other local charities.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council has submitted the application for the works.
